We are passionate about helping small business owners celebrate their achievements by sharing the story of their business journey. We hope that these real stories will inspire you and if you would like to share your journey with us please do get in touch.
This one is from Luke Quilter of Sleeping Giant Media, who we interviewed on the 9th of November 2016.
Sleeping Giant Media is a search and social media agency based in Folkestone. The company has over 35 members of staff who are focused on training and progression, holding regular 15-minute training sessions both for staff and external clients, hosting educational industry events and taking on apprentices. From building their own in-office ballpit, to holding frequent team events like bowling and go-karting, people are at the heart of SGM - as a company they understand that a happy team means happy clients. Sleeping Giant Media has won multiple industry awards, including the Customer Service and Commitment Award at the 2014 KEiBA’s and the Search Category for Agencies with Under 40 Staff at the 2015 Recommended Agency Register Digital Awards.
Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to start up your company?
Anthony Klokkou and I worked client side before starting Sleeping Giant Media. Agencies were part of the day to day. Whenever we contacted an agency, they were either great at tech or at customer service. Never both. Sleeping Giant Media was created to offer just that. It's simple, but not many agencies have been able to do it.
What were the biggest challenges when setting up your business?
For us, it was just a lot of hard work and long hours! That doesn't stop. The determination pays off, though.
What type of business support have you received from your Shepway District Council?
For 2 years we've had rate relief from Shepway District Council, which was great. We used this to recruit and grow faster.
What makes your business unique and differentiates you from your competitors?
Simply being as good as our word. We get great results and offer great customer service. Oh, and our ball pit!
What are your top digital marketing tips for startup businesses?
Ask yourself: 1. What questions do my customers ask? 2. Are the answers on my website? If not, get them on there!
What would you say is your proudest business moment so far?
There have been many great moments, and so little time to reflect. Carrying the Olympic torch was a high point.
What sacrifices have you had to make to become an entrepreneur?
Starting SGM with no income, working through evenings and weekend was tough. I wouldn’t change a thing though!
What does success look like to you?
Success is life balance and happiness. There's not much point in anything else!
What does the future hold? Any exciting plans we should keep an eye out for?
In the face of Brexit and other uncertainties, we will stay agile and react faster than anyone to the change. Sleeping Giant Media is still only 8 years old. We have a lot more we want to achieve in the business.
