What Watford businesses need to know about the town’s future

From major regeneration projects to plans for an Innovation Hub, Watford is investing in its future. We attended Watford Business Connect to hear about the opportunities, support and developments shaping the borough's business landscape – and what they could mean for local entrepreneurs and SMEs.

From major regeneration projects to plans for an Innovation Hub, there are plenty of reasons for Watford businesses to feel optimistic about the future.

Wenta joined local entrepreneurs, business owners and support organisations at Watford Business Connect on 9 June to hear first-hand about the opportunities, investment and support shaping the borough's future.

Hosted by Watford Borough Council, the event brought together organisations from across Hertfordshire to discuss growth, skills, innovation and the practical support available to businesses.

A town investing in growth

If there was one message that came through loud and clear throughout the day, it was that Watford is continuing to invest in its future.

Attendees heard about a range of projects designed to strengthen the local economy, including regeneration work across the town, transport improvements and plans to further establish Watford as a destination for business and innovation.

Despite the economic challenges many businesses continue to face nationally, speakers highlighted Watford's resilience and ability to attract investment, create jobs and support enterprise.

Major developments, including the ongoing Town Hall regeneration programme, are expected to create new opportunities for businesses, residents and visitors alike, helping to drive long-term growth across the area.

Helping SMEs win more business

One of the most encouraging updates for small businesses came from Watford Borough Council's Economic Development Team.

Plans are underway to help more local businesses become "tender-ready", giving SMEs the skills and confidence needed to secure contracts and strengthen their position within larger supply chains.

For growing businesses, this could open doors to new customers and long-term commercial opportunities.

The council also reassured attendees that, as local government structures evolve, support for businesses will remain a priority. The message was simple: Watford is very much open for business.

Why investing in people matters

Another key theme throughout the event was the importance of skills.

Representatives from Hertfordshire Futures and Langley Construction Consultants explored how businesses can tackle skills shortages and future-proof their organisations through training, apprenticeships and workforce development.

The discussion highlighted the benefits of investing in employees, from improved productivity and retention to reduced recruitment costs and greater resilience in changing markets.

For many businesses, growth isn't just about attracting new customers – it's about developing the people already within the organisation.

A future innovation hub for Watford

One of the most exciting announcements of the afternoon centred around plans for the Watford Innovation Hub.

While still in development, the hub is expected to create a focal point for innovation, collaboration and business growth, helping ambitious companies connect with the resources, expertise and networks they need to scale.

For entrepreneurs and SMEs, it represents another signal that Watford is investing in the future of enterprise.

Celebrating businesses making a difference

The event concluded with the Watford Business Pledge Awards, recognising organisations that are making a positive impact on the local economy and community.

The awards celebrate businesses that support local employment, invest in their communities, buy locally and champion environmentally responsible practices.

This year's winners included:

  • Debutots won for Outstanding Purpose-Led Sole Trader
  • Kier Group won for Commitment to Local Employment
  • Photo Fabulous Creative won for Community Impact
  • The Keeper Healthcare Services won for Responsible Healthcare Delivery
  • Harlequin Watford won for Sustainability Leadership

Their achievements served as a reminder that business success isn't measured solely by profit, but by the positive difference organisations make to the people and places around them.
