Barnet Start-Up Support Client Story: Eco Bloom Kompos

"Having access to the one-to-one meetings and support from the team, along with their recorded webinars on a huge range of topics is helping us to turn our idea into a successful business." – Kita Berman van Heerden and Rhys Best

Eco Bloom Kompos (EPK) is the vision of Kita Berman van Heerden and Rhys Best — an aspiring venture dedicated to tackling food waste through environmentally sustainable solutions. Their goal is to create high-quality, nutrient-rich compost from residential and commercial food waste. More than just a waste collection service, Eco Bloom Kompos is built on a mission to give back locally, supporting communities through sustainable composting practices.

Kita and Rhys both work full-time, making it challenging to carve out time for their business venture. With limited hours to dedicate to development, every moment they invest in Eco Bloom Kompos must be incredibly productive. This is where external support has been vital in helping them take their idea from concept to reality.

HOW BARNET’S START-UP PROGRAMME HELPS

Starting a business can be overwhelming, especially when balancing other responsibilities. For Kita and Rhys, the London Borough of Barnet Business Start-up Programme, delivered by Wenta, provided essential guidance and structure to help them move forward.

Through the programme, they accessed one-to-one business advice, networking opportunities and a library of recorded webinars covering a huge range of topics for start-ups. One particularly valuable experience was attending the Barnet Business Breakfast Briefing event at Middlesex University, where they had the opportunity to meet industry professionals. Events like these provided them with insights, networking introductions and the confidence to take the next steps in their journey.

Michael Martin, Wenta’s Head of Net Zero & Business Advice Team first met with Kita and Rhys while showcasing the Barnet Start-Up Programme at the event.

Kita and Rhys were excited about the opportunities that Wenta offers to social enterprises,” says Michael, “their perseverance to overcome challenges as inspiring as their mission to ‘turn today’s food waste into tomorrow’s growth’. Eco Bloom Kompos’ initial steps can lead to millions of tonnes of food waste being diverted from landfill, reducing methane emissions while richer soil for plants better nourishes everyone.

The London Borough of Barnet Business Start-up Programme, funded by UKSPF, is designed to support early-stage businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs. Through expert mentoring, training and business support, it provides the tools needed to turn business ideas into sustainable ventures.

Moving Forward

Kita and Rhys are excited about the future of Eco Bloom Kompos. While still in its early stages, their vision is clear: to create a sustainable food waste solution that benefits both the environment and local communities. With continued support and hard work, they are determined to bring their business to life.
