My business journey: Sun Colours Art

We are passionate about helping small business owners celebrate their achievements by sharing the story of their business journey. We hope that these real stories will inspire you and if you would like to share your journey with us please do get in touch.

This one is from Elaine Mills, founder of Sun Colours Art, who was interviewed on the 17th January 2018

Firstly, could you just explain to us what it is you do?

I design and retail online contemporary paint by numbers projects. I have added 3 new contemporary designs to the Paint By Numbers market, bringing the traditional hobby up to date and making it more relevant for a wider more diverse audience.

What is your business background and what inspired you to startup Sun Colours Art?

Little business experience. Have dabbled in network marketing in the past, however, this is my first venture as a sole trader. I started Sun Colours Art to bring more culturally relevant and modern paint by numbers projects to the market.

What have been the biggest challenges of setting up your business?

Getting to grips with importing and exporting, negotiating contracts and finances.

What aspect of business advice were you looking for when starting up?

I want to discuss other aspects of business related to growth and reaching new consumers as well as further funding information and improving my online presence.

Can you tell us more about your arts &  craft business Sun Colours Art?

I attend exhibitions and craft fairs. At Craft and Hobby Fair in Manchester in Feb with a selection of products. I'm bringing together diverse products for today's consumers. PBN has therapeutic benefits too.

How do you advertise your business?

I advertise on Facebook, Twitter and on Instagram. I have a website and promote the website through all these vehicles.

What would you say is your proudest business moment so far?

Commissioning artists and working with manufacturers to create my new products and seeing the joy and surprise on people's faces when they realise my products are 'paint by numbers' projects that reflect modern society and a fresh approach to arts and craft hobbies.

What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs looking to set up their ?

If you are looking for a new challenge, go for it. If you want to learn about business, go for it. Get good advice; go on a course if you can. Listen to those who have experience and implement what you have learned. Believe in yourself.
