My business journey: Jonathan Wood

We are passionate about helping small business owners celebrate their achievements by sharing the story of their business journey. We hope that these real stories, like the one you are about to read will inspire you and if you would like to share your journey with us please do get in touch.

Jonathan is a 17-year-old Kent based young travel entrepreneur.  Hawk Travel aims to remove the hassle that comes with booking and organising travel and currently targets business travellers and leisure travellers who don’t have the time to manage their own travel. Jonathan started out in business at the age of only 14 and has been running his business by himself for 3 years. He is now managing the business full-time.

We interviewed Jonathan on 24th May 2017.

Could you just explain to us what it is you do?

Hawk Travel is a specialist in business travel and bespoke, luxury leisure travel.

Can you tell us what inspired you to set up your travel business?

I’ve been doing it for family etc since about 11 because I’ve always loved travel. I began to consider it as a business at 14 and I’m now doing it full time.

So what makes Hawk Travel unique and differentiates you from your competitors?

The attention to detail that it shows when making bookings and the hassle-free travel management.

Have you received any financial and mentoring support?

I have a great mentor from The Kent Foundation and also get support from Young Startup Talent

What were the biggest challenges when setting up your company?

My age certainly plays a part, I am currently trying to raise capital to elevate the business, which is made harder by being under 18!

What would you say is your proudest business moment so far?

Reaching the final of Young Startup Talent in 2016 was a great experience. I was naturally disappointed not to have won but the connections I have made are still incredibly important to the business now.

How many hours a day do you work on average?

Very good question! It varies an awful lot - I work a very minimum of 8 hours a day but I also work when I get home in the evenings and sometimes through the night so anything between 8-16 hrs really!

What does success look like to you?

Achieving your goals and exceeding expectations. I also think that tasting defeat is also a big part of becoming successful.

Is there anyone in business you particularly admire?

Rob Nunn started out in business at a similar age to me and has demonstrated his success - he has also given me some excellent guidance in my business.

What are your plans for the future – any exciting plans we should keep an eye out for?

I am working on a business plan that is very nearly complete, I will then be seeking to get some investment to propel the business to where I know it can be!
